Geometry Matters: The Effect of MBBR Plastic Media Shape on Reactor Efficiency, Clarifier Performance and TSE Quality
Dr Sami Kassem
Abstract. The Moving Bed Biofilm Reactor (MBBR) grows biomass on free-moving plastic carriers instead of on suspended flocs. Because the biofilm is the reactor's “engine”, the geometry of the carrier — its specific surface area, protected volume, cell opening, wall thickness, size, density and shape — governs how much active biomass a tank can hold, how well substrate and oxygen reach it, how readily it clogs, how much mixing energy it needs, and what kind of solids it sheds to the downstream clarifier. This article reviews the MBBR process and its applications, defines the geometric parameters of plastic media, analyses their effect on biological kinetics, clarifier performance and treated sewage effluent (TSE) quality, quantifies their effect on energy consumption, surveys the principal media manufacturers, and examines three implemented full-scale plants. A practical selection and specification method is proposed.
